Sightseeing in Washington DC
No visit to Washington DC would be complete with a visit to the famous White House, the residence of the President of the United States. The outside of the building can be easily viewed from a fenced area, while guided tours inside the White House are also available. For security reasons, tours are strictly controlled so make sure you find out when tours are available and get there early.
There are many museums and galleries to visit in Washington DC. The largest and most famous is the Smithsonian Museum. Visitors can spend days looking at the exhibits here, which range from historical to technical. Other good museums include the National Mint and Holocaust Museum.
Fun by night – eating drinking and partying
Washington DC is a political city, but it is also a vibrant student city. The city has three universities: Georgetown, George Washington and American, as well as a campus of Johns Hopkins. This means that during term time, there is a lot of partying going on.
For the hip, young scene, head to the many wine bars and pubs in Georgetown or Adams Morgan. In Georgetown, The Tombs is the Georgetown University bar. Here you can feel what it is like to be back in school again. Capital City Brewery is also a favourite among the young, a microbrewery with great food. Adams Morgan has an eclectic mix of bars and restaurants. In Washington DC, you will find great ethnic food, such as Lebanese, Ethiopian, Thai and Indian cuisine.
Fun by day - shopping and activities
Washington DC itself doesn’t have any huge shopping malls. There is one small shopping mall in Georgetown; otherwise most locals prefer to shop in Virginia. Despite the lack of mega-malls, strolling around Georgetown there are plenty of small shops to enjoy. Everything from antiques to thrift shops and chain stores are present. Head to the Georgetown University book shop if you want to buy any university memorabilia.
