Thomas Cook
February 26, 2008 |
Thomas Cook is the world’s best-known name in travel, thanks to the inspiration and dedication of a single man. Thomas Cook began his international travel company in 1841, with a successful one-day rail excursion at a shilling a head from Leicester to Loughborough. From these humble beginnings Thomas Cook launched a whole new kind of company - devoted to helping Britons see the world.
In 2006 Thomas Cook celebrated the 150th anniversary of taking Britain abroad. The first foreign holiday, in July 1855, was a grand circular tour of Brussels, Cologne, the Rhine, Heidelberg, Baden-Baden, Strasbourg and Paris. Today Thomas Cook offers holidays to more than 1,000 locations. The very latest to be introduced is Brazil, which started receiving Thomas Cook holidaymakers in the Spring of 2006.
Today, Thomas Cook UK & Ireland is the second largest leisure travel group in the UK with around 19,000 employees. It is now part of Thomas Cook plc (www.thomascookgroup.com) which was formed on June 19th 2007 by the merger of Thomas Cook AG and MyTravel Group plc. Thomas Cook also operates its own extensive fleet of jet air craft with plans to offer more leg room in economy than Virgin Atlantic and British Airways. From 1 May 2008, passengers can fly with Thomas Cook Airlines and enjoy a 33 inch seat pitch as standard on long haul flights.
The company’s principal operations include 615 high street shops selling travel and foreign exchange, 121 separate bureaux de change, seven Thomas Cook travel warehouses, three call centres, Thomas Cook TV and thomascook.com, one of the most popular UK travel websites. In addition, Thomas Cook has more than ten tour operating brands including: Thomas Cook, JMC, Sunset, Thomas Cook Signature, Club 18-30, Flexibletrips.com, Neilson, Latitude, Roomsandhotels.com, Sunworld Ireland and Style Holidays. The company also operates Thomas Cook Airlines, the UK’s second largest leisure airline.
