Meridiana
January 9, 2008 |
Founded as Alisarda in 1963, this longstanding Italian airline later changed its name to Meridiana in 1991 and soon afterwards began flying to international destinations such as London and Paris.
Today the airline flies more than three million passengers to and from numerous destinations in Italy connecting to cities throughout Europe. Meridiana’s main hub is located in Olbia on the Italian island of Sardinia with flights connecting to 14 other destinations in the country, such as the Sardinian capital Cagliari along with Rome, Florence, Naples and Milan. Destinations include Barcelona, London, Paris and Amsterdam along with a number of very unusual cities like Pristina, the UN-controlled capital of Kosovo in the former Yugoslavia, and Chisinau, the capital of the East European state of Moldova. Meridiana also runs regular services between its many domestic destinations.
With 23 aircraft in its fleet by May 2007, Meridiana has become a fairly large European operator. Despite is slogan ‘fly simply,’ Meridiana offers business class services on certain international routes while the lowest class is what you would expect of any budget carrier in most respects. Food and drinks must be paid for although magazines and newspapers are provided free of charge on all international flights. Luggage allocations are relatively generous in that 20kg of check-in luggage and 8kg of carry-on is permitted per adult passenger in economy class.
Tickets for the airline can be reserved and paid for at Meridiana’s website or at selected travel agents. Unlike your average budget airline, Meridiana publishes its airfares all-inclusive of relevant taxes and surcharges, in euros. Domestic Italian fares generally start at under 45 euros for a one-way ticket. Expect to pay around 60 euros and over for any one of the airline’s international flights, the longest of which is between Tenerife in the Canary Islands and Verona in Italy.
