Aero Asia Airlines
January 9, 2008 |
Recently suspended from operating for failing to meet minimum safety standards, Pakistan based Aero Asia is currently not in service. Previously the airline offered both domestic and international services from its main base at Jinnah International Airport, Karachi.
In operation since 1993, the airline was established by the Tabani Group with just three Yakovlev Yak-42D aircraft. Initially only offering domestic routes servicing Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore, the airline quickly expanded to offer international services and replaced its old fleet with Boeing 737-200Advs and Douglas DC-9s.
Prior to the current suspension of services, Aero Asia flights ceased in May 2006 on request of the Civil Aviation Authority on the basis that the airline was in debt. The airline was subsequently purchased by the UK based Regal Group and a new headquarters set up in Yorkshire, UK. Since the sale and the suspension of services, restructuring to meet international safety standards is underway.
Should services recommence, the following destinations in Pakistan will be served: Faislabad, Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar and Sukkur. In addition, several Middle Eastern destinations are likely to be serviced including Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Muscat. Flights from Pakistan to the UK’s Manchester and Nottingham airports may also be resumed.
Prior to suspension, the Aero Asia fleet consisted of Douglas DC-9-51s and McDonnell Douglas MD-82s. The new owners are looking into the possibility of purchasing new aircraft prior to recommencing services.
The airline will likely continue to promote the same services should they resume operations, including friendly and courteous crew, comfort, in-flight meals and special services for the old, sick and children. Passengers who are part of the Member Club programme are entitled to special promotions.
