Adria Airways is a long standing low-cost airline in Slovenia and is today the national airline. It was founded in 1961 under the name Adria Aviopromet, operating a Douglas DC-6 and later in the same year bought more of the same aircraft from KLM. In 1980 the airline became a member of the International Air Traffic Association, IATA, providing mostly charter services throughout Europe. In 1983 scheduled international flights were added, starting with flights to Larnaca in Cyprus. March 1996 saw the completion of the part privatisation of Adria Airways and in Novemeber 2004 the airline became a regional member of Star Alliance.

The Adria Airways’ headquarters are in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the main hub being Brnik Airport. With its fleet of 16 aircraft, including three airbus A320-231, the airline is able to offer its customers a reliable service to over 20 destinations throughout Europe, including France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.

Despite offering flights at reasonable rates, Adria Airways does not compromise on service. Professional, friendly staff serves passengers a range of beverages and meals and the airline puts great emphasis on aircraft design and comfort. In general, check-in for domestic flights closes half an hour before departure, while for international schedules the deadline is one and a half hours. Seating is generally allocated but customers may request their preferred place if necessary.

Following a number of minor accidents and one major crash by Adria Airways aircraft in the late 70s and early 80s the company suffered some bad publicity but has managed to rebuild its reputation, not only in Slovenia but throughout Europe. Furthermore, since the devastating plane crashes of 9/11, Adria Airways has operated at a loss for six years. However, last year the company reported a minimal profit and with its 543 employees intends to increase income for 2007 by 9%.
